I grew up in a single-family home in an urban environment surrounded by poverty, drugs and violence. Growing up on Chicago's West Side has taught me many lessons that I try to pass on today. I believe anyone can accomplish their educational goals if they work hard and have support from others. My mother worked hard to set me up for success by placing me into a preschool program that taught me that learning is fun and should be enjoyed and encouraged. I attended Marconi Community Academy, where I was treated with love and great care from the 1st to 8th grade. My teachers inspired me to attend math contests and science fairs, which increased my eagerness to gain knowledge. During my eighth grade year, a professional's presentation, which was held at my elementary school, inspired me to pursue their occupation. I made a decision to become an accountant after the intriguing speech from the accountant who shared that day.
My high school years began in Chicago, IL where I attended Von Steuben High, which at that time was considered one of Chicago's top high schools. I moved to Oakland, CA in my sophomore year where I attended and graduated from Castlemont High School. My educational journey led me to San Jose State University where I received a BS in Business/Accounting. I was the first individual on my mother's side of the family to graduate from a four year university.
I currently hold the title as the Internal Controls Supervisor for the Capital Projects and Facilities Management Department within the University of California at San Francisco. I am responsible for evaluating CPFM departmental accounting processes, which include developing solutions and process modifications.
My wife, Tracey, son BJ and I reside in Oakland, CA and we hope that this program will inspire our youth to dream big and build great futures by applying themselves today. |
